On today’s Options News, Carrie Long and the www.ONN.tv team look back at Tuesday’s price action in the broader market, highlighted by after-hours earnings reports from Apple (AAPL), Starbucks (ABUX), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Yahoo! (YHOO) beating out analyst estimates. The Dow gained 68 points to 8,915, and the S&P 500 climbed 3.5 points to 955. The CBOE SPX Volatility Index (VIX) dropped 0.5 points to 24, most likely coming off continued outperforming earnings announcements. As the S&P 500 rallies higher than 950, we could see the VIX reach a new low sooner than expected.
Early Market Indications
Ahead of the U.S. market open, S&P 500 futures are down 3.5 points to 950, and international markets are down, with Hong Kong down 1%, and Europe down 0.01%.
Potential Rallies in EMC and Allstate

Call buyers dominated options activity in EMC and Allstate yesterday. More than 20,00 Sept. 15 calls changed hands in EMC yesterday. And an investor bought 5,000 Aug. 25 calls right out of the gate for around $1.10 with the stock at $24.72 a share. Will these stocks rally on earnings or not? The call buyers could be betting that they will. EMC announces earnings before the open, and ALL announces their quarterly performance after the market closes on Aug. 5.
